Caving Tours in Aggtelek and Jósvafő
![]() Baradla Cave is the most significant and the most spectacular cave not only in the region, but also in Hungary. As all the caves in the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst, the Baradla was also entitled to a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
It is a special wet habitat, and it is under the protection of the Ramsar Convention since 2001. The cave itself is strictly protected. Baradla Cave is the longest cave in Hungary. Its total length, considering also its Slovakian part, is 25,8 km. Its Slovakian part is called Domica, its length is 5,3 km. Its natural entrances situated next to Aggtelek have been known and used by humans for several thousands of years. The cave was formed in a Triassic age lime stone by the heavy eroding work of water. Limestone is easily dissolved by rainwater that is why most of the limestone mountains look like a huge Swiss cheese inside. Th e main passage of the cave actually is a bed of an underground stream having several branches. The main passage is nearly 7 km long, it can be found between Aggtelek and Jósvafő. Its average width is 10 m, height is 7-8 m forming huge underground halls at some places. Stalagtites and stalagmites with different colours and sizes are the unique rock formations of the cave.
The Aggtelek National Park Directorate organises 1-, 2-, 5-, and 7-hour long cave tours in the Baradla Cave.The cave tours leave from Aggtelek and Jósvafõ and each tour visits parts of the Baradla cave of various length and difficulty. You can experience the cave’s wonderful acoustics during any of the tours. You can choose from the following tours according to your fitness and challange interest:
Short Tour
Visitors can get into the depth of earth through one of the natural entrances. In the 1,000 m long cave part equipped with electric lighting the visitors can take a 1-hour long underground walk.This tour includes a part of the cave that was even used by prehistoric men. During the tour, visitors can take part in an unforgettable event: listening to music in the Concert Hall.

Vörös-tó Tour
The tour starts at the so called Vörös-tó entrance and ends at the cave exit in Jósvafő. It follows the course of the Styx Stream and passes by the 19m high “Observatory”, which is the tallest stalagmite in Hungary. Visitors can experience the special acoustics of the cave by listening to some music in the “Giants’ Hall”.
During the around 2 hours tour the visitors take a 2-3 km walk from the Vörös-tó entrance to the Jósvafő exit of the cave. From Jósfafő the visitors return back to the entrace by the minibuses of the National Park. Min. 1 person
Long Tour
The tours starts on the route of the Short Tour, where the visitors can view the most famous halls of the cave with the impressive stalagmite formations. After a short music listening in the Concert Hall, the tour continues in the non-illuminated limb to the exit in Jósvafő. The tour is 5 hours long (7 km).
Min 10 and max 35 persons. The min. age is 10 years.
Booking in advance only (min. 2 weeks before starting) Rákóczi Cave
This cave is situated near the village of Bódvarákó (about 20 km far from Jósvafő), in the Esztramos Hill close to the Bódva River. The cave is famous for special dripstone formations such as pea-like (or popcorn-like) dripstones with unique colours.
The crystal clear water of its lakes enchant visitors. Getting into the cave is possible through an artificial mining tunnel. Within the cave, iron steps and ladders help participants to discover the underground world of wonders. The tour is 1 hour long (400 m).
The tour starts even with one participant, but in order to protect the cave, the number of visitors is limited to 10 persons at a time. Only persons above the age of 10 can participate. Min 1 and max 10 persons. The min. age is 10 years.
Booking in advance only (min. 2 weeks before starting) Kossuth Cave The tour in the Kossuth Cave with its streamy trips is more extreme. In its stalagmite poor limb the visitors can reach the endpoint with climbing on rocks, get through rope bridges and ladders, and they can return to the entrance on the same route. The route goes along arista columns and rowels as far as the Big Lake. The visitors can get through the lake by a canopy. The tour goes to the lake of the Hopeless-sifon, it takes cca 5 hours. Min 5 and max 10 persons. The min. age is 14 years.
Booking in advance only (min. 2 weeks before starting) Béke (Peace) Cave A Béke Cave is the second longest cave of the Aggtelek Karst. In the spacious, reach in formation trips every formation type can be found. The cave is built only at the entrance, the other parts are intact, the visitors have to wade in the stream, mainly in rainy seasons.
The entrance of the cave is a 2 hour walking from Aggtelek. The tour in the cave is 3 hours long (2 km). The tour includes battery lights. The visitors have to get the most part of the tour in waist deep water. You need waterproof dress or changing clothes, gum boots or changing shoes. The tour needs good condition and fitness. Min 5 and max 10 persons. The min. age is 14 years.
Booking in advance only (min. 2 weeks before starting) Meteor Cave
This is the most spectacular cave of the National Park. The visitors have the most extreme challange during this tour. You have to climb up to the hill first, then get through a narrow entrance in to the cave.
You have to crawl and climb amongst rocks and on ladders in narrow pits in order to reach the Hall of The Titans in the depth of 100 m with the unique numbers of dripstones. The tour includes battery lights and helmets. The visitors have to get the most part of the tour in water. You need waterproof dress or changing clothes, gum boots or changing shoes. The tour needs very good condition and fitness.
The tour is 3 hour long in the cave and 2 hours walking and climbing outside. Min 5 and max 10 persons. The min. age is 14 years.
Booking in advance only (min. 2 weeks before starting) ![]() The journey to Aggtelek from Budapest takes about 3,5 hours. We suggest you to spend the night in the surroundings of Aggtelek. Next day you can choose an other caving tour or you can take a bath in the cave bath of Miskolctapolca before you return to Budapest. Cave Bath of Miskolctapolca:
